Natural veining in Spanish alabaster

Stone Selected from Spain

Spanish alabaster comes from the Almería region in southeastern Spain. It is prized for its warm, honey tone and the way light passes through it. We select each block for its color and translucency before it is shaped into a lamp.

Hand-chipped alabaster edge

Handmade, So No Two Are Alike

Artisans cut every shade from a solid block, then shape and sand it by hand. Curved forms like domes and capsules take the longest to finish. Because the stone is natural, the color and veining of your piece will differ slightly from the photos.

Brushed brass fitting on alabaster

Finished with Brass Details

Most fittings come in brushed or antique brass, a classic pairing in Spanish lighting. Alabaster is heavier than glass, so check the weight rating of your ceiling or wall before you install.

Translucent alabaster surface

Covered by a 1-Year Warranty

Every AuraLumelamp light comes with a one-year warranty. If something goes wrong, contact us and we will help you fix it.

Alabaster vs Other Lampshade Materials

Alabaster glows from within the stone, while most other materials either block light or let it through evenly. Here is how they compare.

How to Tell Real Alabaster from Fake

Many “alabaster” lights are cast resin or stone powder mixed with resin. Use these quick checks before you buy.

  • Touch: Real alabaster feels soft, cool and slightly waxy.
  • Light: Hold it to a lamp. Real stone shows uneven, cloud-like veining and glows from inside.
  • Pattern: If every unit in a listing looks identical, it is likely not solid stone.
  • Weight: Solid alabaster is noticeably heavier than resin of the same size.

How Bright Is Alabaster Lighting?

Alabaster softens light rather than blocking it. Expect a warm, ambient glow, not a bright task light. For a reading nook or kitchen, pair it with a second light source.

  • Color temperature: 2700K brings out the stone's honey tone. Cooler bulbs can make it look gray.
  • Brightness: Choose a higher lumen bulb if the fixture is your main light.
  • Dimming: A dimmable LED bulb and dimmer switch let you go from bright to cozy.
  • Care: Alabaster is porous, so keep it dry. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth and never use water or glass cleaner. Handle the fixture by its metal frame, not the stone.

Alabaster Lighting FAQ

Is Spanish alabaster fragile?

Alabaster is softer than marble and can chip if dropped or knocked against a hard edge, but it is durable enough for everyday use once installed. Handle unpackaged pieces by their base or frame rather than the stone panels.

How do I clean an alabaster lamp?

Dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, glass cleaner and other liquids, because alabaster is porous and can absorb moisture, which may cause staining or clouding.

Why does my piece look different from the product photos?

Each piece is cut from natural stone, so veining, color and translucency vary between units and between batches. This is expected with solid alabaster and is not a defect.

Is alabaster the same as marble?

No. Both are natural stones, but marble is harder, denser and typically opaque, while alabaster is a softer gypsum stone known for letting light pass through it. We use marble for lamp bases and alabaster for shades and panels.

How much light comes through an alabaster shade?

Light diffuses through the stone as a warm, even glow rather than a direct beam, so alabaster fixtures are best for ambient light. The exact glow depends on the stone's thickness and the bulb's wattage. See each product's Specifications section for the recommended bulb.

Is alabaster lighting worth the price?

Yes, if you want a light that looks good switched off as well as on. Natural stone and handwork cost more than resin or glass, but every piece is unique and built to last.

Where does your alabaster come from?

Our alabaster is selected from Spain, mainly the Almería region. Each light is then handmade from that stone.

Can I use alabaster lights in a bathroom?

No. Alabaster is porous and absorbs moisture, which can stain or weaken the stone. Our lights are made for dry indoor spaces like dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and living rooms.

Are alabaster lights dimmable?

Most are, when you use a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. See each product page for bulb details.

What does the warranty cover?

Every light comes with a one-year warranty. Contact our team with your order number and photos, and we will help you.
